Description

Rolaj, the Hermit by the River

North of the great city of Dakvania, where the river bends wide beneath the shadow of the mountains, there lives a quiet man known as Rolaj. No one remembers when he arrived. One morning, a thin pillar of smoke rose above the treeline, and by evening, travelers found a small cabin near the water. Its walls were simple and sturdy, its hearth warm, and above the door hung a weathered shield that had clearly seen many battles.

Rolaj speaks little of his past. When he does, it is in fragments, as though his memories come and go like the morning fog. He recalls no homeland or family name, yet certain things feel deeply familiar to him. He moves with the ease of someone who once carried a shield often, and though he cannot say why, his instinct to protect others has never faded.

“I think I used to stand between others and danger,” he once told a Dakvanian woodcutter. “My hands know how to shield, even if I no longer know for whom.”

Though much of his mind is a blank canvas, his beliefs are not. Rolaj lives by a simple truth: all people should be treated as equals. He does not bow to noble titles or priestly ranks, nor does he seek wealth or recognition. To him, the only measure of worth is kindness. Yet even he draws a hard line when it comes to the Zebians. Their devotion to cruelty and corruption fills him with a quiet hatred he cannot explain. Some whisper that it is because of something he endured before his memory vanished, though Rolaj himself claims not to know.

He is counted among the members of Dakvania’s guild, though he keeps his distance from the bustle of the city. He contributes to the guild’s prosperity when he can, bringing timber, ore, and game from the wilds. His greatest gift, however, lies not in his hands, but in the strange energy that flows through them. Rolaj has a natural affinity for druidic magic, particularly the kind that mends flesh and soothes pain. When he focuses, a faint green light envelops his hands, and wounds close as though time itself has been reversed.

He insists the magic is not his, but borrowed from the world around him. “The land does the healing,” he once said. “I simply listen when it asks to help.”

Those who know him speak of his modesty and solitude. His home sits where the forest thins and the river widens, with a clear view of Dakvania’s lights at dusk. He often stands at the water’s edge, watching the city from afar. Some say he yearns to return, while others believe he has found peace in his quiet exile.

Guildmates who visit him from time to time find a man of few words but deep thought. Around his campfire, he sometimes shares glimpses of a forgotten life.

“I do not remember where I came from,” he once said, stirring the embers with a stick. “But I remember what it felt like to stand for something. Maybe that is enough.”

When talk turns to the Zebians, however, his expression changes. His voice lowers, his eyes shift toward the treeline, and the air around him grows tense. “They have forgotten balance,” he says. “One day, the land will remind them.”

Rolaj lives simply, working, wandering, and healing where he is needed. Though he has forgotten much, he carries himself with a quiet certainty that he once lived for a purpose, and that one day, that purpose may find him again. To those who know of him, he is more than a hermit. He is a reminder that peace does not mean weakness, and that even those who live alone can protect many.

Rumors of Rolaj

Travelers who pass through Dakvania often share tales of the hermit by the river. Some claim the Zebians avoid his lands entirely, as though an unseen barrier keeps them at bay. Others tell of lights in the trees on certain nights, green and silver like dancing fireflies, accompanied by a low hum that fades with the dawn. Many have tried to find the source of the light, yet none have ever succeeded.

But the most curious rumor comes from a wandering bard whose song changes slightly each time it is sung. His ballad tells of a nameless warrior from decades past, a man who carried a shield marked with the image of a river and a mountain. According to the tale, the warrior once defended the settlement of Botanica from a great Zebian assault, holding the gates alone until reinforcements arrived from the surrounding lands. When the battle ended, the warrior was nowhere to be found. Some said he had fallen, others that he had simply vanished into the wilds, his duty complete.

Whenever the bard performs the song, listeners exchange quiet looks toward the north, where Rolaj’s home rests by the riverbank. The details are too close to ignore: the shield, the vanished defender, the man who appeared from nowhere years later with no memory of his past. Yet Rolaj himself offers no answers. When asked about the story, he only gives a faint smile and says, “If I were that man, I think the land would have told me by now.”

No one knows the truth, and perhaps Rolaj does not either. Still, the rumor persists, spreading from campfires to caravans, from farmers to travelers. And when someone is healed in the woods north of Dakvania, or when a Zebian raiding party disappears without a trace, the people quietly say the same thing.

“It must have been the hermit by the river.”
